An ancient princely residence
Built in 1568 by prince of the Church, the cardinal Tolomeo Gallio, Villa d’Este was acquired in 1815 as a residence of Caroline of Brunswick, Princess of Wales and futur Queen of England. Between 1868 and 1870, before becoming a mythical hotel in 1873, the site hosted the wife of Russian tsar, the empress Maria Feodorovna.
A setting with Renaissance decorations
Entirely renovated, the ancient summer residence of the cardinal Tolomeo Gallio preserved all its charm, its glory and magic. It is one of the most beautiful architectural works of the XVI century designed by Pellegrino Pellegrini. We can contemplate in its salons numerous and splendid works of art of the french school, of Canova and other decorative items made by Andrea Appiani.
The hotel surrounded by a magnificent 10-hectare private park classed as Italian heritage. It includes the sixteenth century creations (the Hercules fountain, Temple Telemachus, the Nymph of Pellegrino Pellegrini), a beautiful botanical garden, a majestic plane tree more than 500 years old and a wide variety of trees and century-old plants.
